DTF & Shop Cost

What DPI Should You Use for DTF Transfers?

A practical DPI target for DTF artwork, how to check your file before print, and when to resize the canvas.

Most DTF shops ask for 300 DPI artwork at the final print size. That does not mean “any 300 DPI export from Canva” — it means your pixel dimensions must match the inches you plan to print.

The rule in one sentence

DPI = pixels ÷ print inches. If the math does not work, the RIP may still print the file, but edges and small type will look soft.

Recommended targets

How to check your file in 60 seconds

  1. Note the print width you want in inches (from your size chart or template).
  2. Open the file’s pixel width in your design tool.
  3. Divide pixels by inches — that is your effective DPI.

Use our DPI Calculator or Image Print Size Calculator so you do not do the division by hand.

Common mistakes

When you can go below 300 DPI

Large graphics viewed from a distance (back prints on jackets, oversized streetwear) sometimes survive 240–260 DPI if edges are bold and type is minimal. For storefront quality and fewer reprints, stay at 300 for standard apparel.

FAQ

Is 300 DPI required for every DTF printer?

Policies differ by shop and RIP. 300 at final size is the safest default for sharp results and fewer rejections.

Can I fix low DPI by sharpening?

Sharpening adds contrast, not real detail. Rebuild or replace the art when DPI is far below target.

Is this guide a substitute for manufacturer specs?

No. Use it for workflow and quoting structure, then follow your film, ink, blank and press brand charts.
